General Questions
The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends a first orthodontic visit by age 7. This helps us monitor jaw growth and detect any early issues that may need intervention.
No referral is needed! You can schedule a consultation with us directly, whether for yourself or your child.
Expanders are a great orthodontic tool and when used appropriately can help address bite issues and make room for overly crowded teeth. Expanders also can have a positive impact on a person's airway. Ultimately a thorough exam is needed in order to determine if your child would benefit from an expander.
Treatment time varies depending on the complexity of the case. On average, braces or Invisalign treatment lasts between 12 to 24 months.
You may feel mild soreness or pressure for a few days after adjustments, but it’s temporary and manageable with over-the-counter pain relievers.
While dentists focus on overall oral health, orthodontists specialize in straightening teeth and correcting bite issues through advanced training in orthodontics.
Treatment-Specific Questions
Invisalign uses clear, removable trays that are nearly invisible, allowing you to eat and brush without restrictions. It’s a great option for those wanting a more discreet treatment option. There’s also usually less discomfort and fewer office visits for Invisalign treatment compared to braces.
Yes! Braces can still be used, though adjustments may be needed to work around crowns or implants. We will design a customized treatment plan for your specific needs.
Absolutely! Regular cleanings and check-ups with your dentist are essential to maintain oral health while wearing braces or aligners.
Braces require adjustments every 6 to 8 weeks, while Invisalign check-ins may be scheduled every 8 to 12 weeks depending on your progress.
Yes, retainers help maintain your new smile by keeping teeth in place after braces or Invisalign treatment. Skipping retainers can cause teeth to shift back over time.
Emergency & Troubleshooting Questions
If a bracket becomes loose but isn’t causing discomfort, call us to schedule a repair appointment during regular business hours. If it’s irritating your mouth, cover it with orthodontic wax and call the office and we’ll find an emergency appointment for you.
You can try using a clean pencil eraser to gently push the wire down or cover it with orthodontic wax. If the discomfort continues, contact us to have it trimmed.
No worries! Move onto your next aligner and wear it for a full week plus whatever days you missed in the previous aligner.
You’ll need to avoid hard, sticky, and chewy foods that could damage your braces. Cutting food into smaller pieces and sticking to soft foods can help during the adjustment period.
If your retainer feels too tight or doesn’t fit at all, schedule an appointment as soon as possible. Your teeth may have shifted, and we’ll need to evaluate the best solution.
